What It Feels Like To Be A Client Just Think Of Visiting Your Dentist
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers What it Feels Like to be a Client: Just Think of Visiting Your Dentist How are dentists like lawyers? Read on, youâll get my take on the question. As you are reading this blog, I will be sitting in the chair at my favorite periodontist getting my second surgical implant done, and hoping I wonât need the pain pills he prescribed that I declined. A few years ago, a young lawyer I was coaching at the time and I met with Tyler, an associate who had worked for me. When Tylerâs wife became a permanent federal appeals court clerk in Kansas City, Tyler left our firm and went in house with a large construction company. During the conversation the associate asked Tyler a very interesting question: What do you know now that you wished you had known when you were practicing law with Cordell? Tylerâs answer took me by surprise. He replied: Even when you do a really great job handling a litigation matter, your in-house counsel will still not be happy. It is just the nature of litigation. Iâve spent more time in my life than I would have ever wanted seated in dental chairs. It all started with braces, then getting two of my teeth loosened beyond repair in a football practice, without pads or helmets. Our fullback went the wrong way and the crown of his head found my mouth. That, of course, made them look dark when the braces came off and thatâs when the serious dental work started. I like to tell my friends that I could own at least one Mercedes Benz or BMW car for the amount of money Iâve paid to dentists. I believe dentists, thankfully not mine, can give you a greater understanding of Tylerâs point. No one getâs up in the morning and says: Oh boy, I get to visit my dentist this morning. I know I didnât say that this morning. Even when they do a great job with your teeth, you hate paying them. Some dentists, again thankfully not mine, want feedback. I saw a question one time, with ratings from 1-10. How happy are you with your smile and the whiteness of your teeth? I donât know about you, but if I had responded with anything other than âdamn happy,â Iâd probably not return to that dentist. Questions: If you need substantial treatment, do you feel like you are giving up control of your mouth and pocketbook to professionals you may not really know? (Iâve had work done by a dentist who was not very good. It cost even more to fix his mistakes.) Arenât there about 1oo other ways youâd rather be spending the money? The truth is your clients feel the same way, only for you it is likely worse. You are like the dental hygienist telling your client they didnât do something right. You are like the dentist telling your client how you can fix the problem. Then, you are like the âtreatment coordinatorâ telling the client it will cost an arm and a leg and be money they would rather spend on at least 1oo other things. No one gets up in the morning and says: âOh boy, I get to see my lawyer today.â Tyler was right. Your clients hate the cost, hate the time it takes, hate the uncertainty and fear they may not have the best lawyer for the job. One final thought: I recommend that you never tell a client: âIf only you had notâ¦â I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

The difference between knowledge and wisdom
The distinction among information and astuteness The distinction among information and astuteness We should for a second envision two altogether different individuals, with two totally different foundations, considering something very similar in their own exceptional manners. For this situation, it's the ocean. The first is a college educator, somebody who is a specialist on oceanography; the second is a good old fisherman. The teacher went out into the world, vanquished its numerous difficulties, in the long run winding up at the most renowned of colleges, learning at the edge of our aggregate information. The angler, notwithstanding, did what he was normal: He moved on from secondary school - itself was a serious accomplishment in his locale - yet at that point, he took over from his dad, keeping an eye on the waters that encompassed them, similarly as his own dad had taken over from his dad before him.Over the decades, these men concentrated the very same space yet from various vantage focuses, with somewhat various purposes. The educator knew the entirety of the powers oversee ing the waterways on Earth, however he invested little energy in the genuine ocean. The angler, obviously, invested the entirety of his energy in the ocean, however he knew little of the extravagant terminology. Now, how about we pose a fascinating inquiry: Who out of these men has a more profound comprehension of how the ocean functions - the teacher or the fisherman? It's an extreme inquiry, and it's likewise a vague one. On the off chance that your first desire is to pose your own inquiry in light of explain what is implied by a more profound comprehension, I'd state that that is a decent advance. Setting here issues. But, when, in various structures, this inquiry is posed in reasoning (logic versus induction) or in brain research (Do IQ tests measure something significant as it identifies with the lived world?) or regarding the utility of rationale (deliberations versus reality), numerous individuals settle for one side and make some hard memories accommodating the two out of a wa y that does them two justice. At its center, this inquiry is actually an issue of information: How would we gain information about the world? Logic says that it originates from our considerations (from language, reason, and arithmetic), though experimentation says that it originates from our faculties (from perceptions, propensity examples, and instincts), and once this qualification has been made, each school cuts its way further away from the other, prompting useless contentions that disregard the likelihood that perhaps basic decrease isn't the most ideal path forward here.My own beginning stage is somewhat unique. To begin with, I recommend that a superior method to see this is to recognize information and knowledge, and afterward, I additionally propose that we move away from the realist empiricist division. In Buddhism, for instance, there is no division on the grounds that in numerous conventions, thought itself is viewed as a sense, only an all the more remarkable one - as it were, an auxiliary one. Their beginning stage is cognizance, and from that point, they see every one of the capacities of the human body - sight, sound, smell, contact, taste, and truly, thought - as a state of investigation into the idea of reality. It's evident that people don't encounter all that awareness brings to the table. Snakes, for instance, can see things in their field of cognizance that people can't. Thus, pooches can smell things in their field of awareness that people can't. This doesn't imply that these sights and scents don't exist in human conditions; it just implies that people don't have the transformative bodies that can take advantage of these various types of encounters. Theoretically, in the event that awareness is an interminable dull field, at that point each sense can be thought of as a little splendid light that enlightens one piece of it to reveal reality. A canine or a snake's field illuminates unexpected parts in comparison to that of a human's field, however neither catches the entire thing. The fascinating thing about people, obviously, is that we have this workforce for complex reasoning, which permits us to make information. Presently, what is information? Going with the current similarity, information in this sense is the capacity to reach past a solitary detached light into the interminable field of awareness. You may have the option to refine and prepare your hearing and your sight to permit you to concentrate a greater amount of the real world, however there is as yet a cutoff to what you can hear and smell, which implies that the scope of the five faculties is constrained. The span of the intuition, the auxiliary sense, which is thought, permits us to utilize language and science make reflections that can anticipate what will occur in a world a million light years from here. As it were, it permits us to make extra detects to investigate cognizance and the Universe with. All things considered, and this is the reason its an auxiliary sense, none of this involves direct understanding, and that carries with it periodic problems.Thought and information force deliberations onto reality, and with the correct idea and the correct information, they permit us to delineate reality genuinely well. All things considered, regardless of how great the guide is, it's as yet a guide and not the real thing. Perceptions and instincts through the other five faculties permit us to legitimately encounter this reality. There is no guide. It's only an exposed, bare experience that associates with the cerebrum. Presently, obviously, it's notable that these other five faculties can lead us off track (prompt displeasure, for instance, isn't generally an impression of the genuine reality before you), however on the off chance that satisfactorily prepared (as insightful conventions like Buddhism plan to do), at that point they are a far more grounded impression of a specific lived condition than thought. It's no occurrence that c utting-edge meditators, who have refined their faculties to a further extent than individuals less familiar with the way, are said to have a further extent of astuteness, and that is on the grounds that their experience of the truth is more genuine, less blurred. They have figured out how to legitimately interface with their environmental factors in a manner that fits their being with that of the being around them. Thusly, we can say that reasoning, the optional sense, is the thing that permits us to construct information (which is both group - making science - and individual - learning science), and along these lines, information fails towards logic. Yet, the other five faculties permit us to make intelligence, which is just ever individual, and it fails towards induction. Lessening one to the next overlooks the way that they are intuitive in a manner that maybe we don't have the jargon to completely map.In this sense, in the event that we return it to the educator and the angler, we can say that the teacher knows about the ocean, though the angler is insightful concerning how act in amicability with the ocean. This qualification is significant in light of the fact that one references an optional sense (thought) and its capacity clarify things a long ways past the spans of different faculties (albeit just as far as hypotheticals since it hasn't encountered them) and different references the five detects that can be refined to comprehend things alright to give us data about how to really act on the planet before us.If the teacher abruptly went out into the ocean with just his insight and with no experience, he may have a marginally simpler time collaborating with the ocean than, state, somebody who is totally clear, yet its absolutely impossible that he would have the instinct that sufficiently reveals to him how to endure a tempest or how to react to the flows in the correct manner. On the other hand, the angler might have the option to explore the entirety o f the brutality that this world tosses at him, however he can't reveal to you why such that makes widespread sense. In the field of brain science, the idea of IQ, which should generally quantify general insight (for the most part innate) has a strong history of examination behind it. Indeed, it's one of the most solidly tried measures in the field and the connections it shows are similarly tough. However, there is a great deal of contention about whether it truly plays as large of a job in reality as is upheld by certain individuals. Normally, individuals have a motivation to both minimize its job (It's not reasonable that something so out of our control should direct such a large amount of what we escape life) and to upstage its job (It's extremely difficult to precisely gauge these things, and a few people have an undue trust in setting up connections as though they recommend something they really don't). The inquiry, at that point, is: How much does IQ make a difference as it iden tifies with things like achievement in the genuine world? In the system I have spread out, IQ would generally catch conceptual reasoning capacity, or the ability to make and amass information. Presently, does information help in exploring this present reality? Or then again even better, is the educator increasingly outfitted to manage the brutality of the ocean than the normal individual? What's more, the appropriate response is obviously yes. All things considered, an angler needn't bother with a high IQ to overwhelm in his specialized topic in the event that he has invested energy gathering intelligence in that specific area and revising for blunders over time.Wisdom can be both relevant (being an incredible angler or being an extraordinary soccer player or being an incredible marketing specialist) or it tends to be general (comprehension and managing life in a solid route as, state, a priest would be better prepared to do), and both of these sorts of shrewdness can benefit from ou tside assistance with information yet information isn't a prerequisite for them to show if the exact limit of the faculties in the individual typifying them has been created to a sufficiently high degree of capability, and an IQ test has nothing valuable to state about that. Everything it does is disclose to you that you have the inalienable ability to amass and make information, which is plainly significant, however not significant enough, in light of the fact that this present reality goes one stage past hypothesis, and that is, it requires activity - the capacity to interface with and adjust to an evolving reality, which is a completely unique ball-game.When an angler is out in the ocean, he moves with

The Magic of An Executive Biography for Your Job Search
The Magic of An Executive Biography for Your Job Search If youâre an executive or rising leader looking for your next choice opportunity, youâve probably shined up your resume in anticipation of calls from recruiters, and taken the time to prepare a targeted cover letter. But have you considered using a biography as well? A narrative of your career designed as a short, yet powerful summary of your accomplishments, a career biography can help different members of your target audience (such as CEOs, networking contacts, or Boards of Directors) grasp your value proposition and personal brand. In fact, youâll find that some interviewers will react more positively to an executive biography than they will to your resume, favoring the bio because of its brevity and narrative flow. Here are some reasons to wrap an executive biography â" as well as your resume â" into your leadership job hunting portfolio: â" A biography is more succinct than a resumeâ"and this works to your benefit. Who has time to read a full resume? Many HR professionals and CEOs donât. The next time youâre in an interview, notice the interviewerâs finger tracing down the second (or perhaps third) pages of your executive resume⦠because they havenât fully digested the contents of it yet! Most biographies are a just page in length (although very senior executives may have a multi-page bio)â"making them simpler to skim for pertinent detail. However, just like a resume, a career bio can display varied sections to demonstrate your skills in action, as in this sample of an Asset Manager Biography. â" Your professional bio can be a powerful networking tool. In cases where a multi-page resume is too cumbersome, a career biography makes for a door-opening, concise introduction. A bio is a perfect fit during networking events, expanding upon the traditional elevator pitch by outlining your brand message in more detail. If you are meeting (or conversing online) with someone other than the hiring decision-maker, try presenting your professional bio instead of your resume. Itâs less likely to overwhelm your contacts, and provides just enough data for someone who isnât calling the shots⦠but who might be impressed enough with your background to carry it to an employer. An executive biography is also a great leave-behind document after the interview. When written strategically, it can offer a slightly different perspective on your leadership valueâ"as well as an indelible impression. â" Executive biographies often captivate different audiences. Many of the people youâll meet during a job search will form an opinionâ"positive or not-so-greatâ"of your resume, especially if they believe it should be formatted or written differently. Executive resumes are often filled with analytical detail, which can also be information overload for some interviewers. A professional bio, on the other hand, employs a different, softer tone, while still delivering a compelling story. This is why a Board member might find your biography intriguing, but skim over your resume just to hit the high points. To decide if you should present an executive biography at each stage of the job hunt process, first identify the parties that youâre likely to interface with, and then gauge their tolerance for technical detail. As a general rule, the higher-up and more strategic the decision-maker, the more likely your biography will suffice as a welcome introduction. In summary, consider including an executive biography as part of your job search plan⦠not to replace your resume, but in addition to it. In addition, perusing executive bio samples will give you a good idea of how a biography can showcase your personality and career achievementsâ"all crucial parts of the brand value that you offer prospective employers.

Is the Open Office Dying
Is the Open Office Dying Credit: Branislav Nenin/Shutterstock Over the previous decade, numerous cutting edge workplaces have progressed from private to open, with a floorplan liberated from desk areas or shut workspaces, and fixed with shared tables. As per an infographic by Sage on open office plans, 80 percent of U.S. organizations execute this kind of design, including Apple, Google and Facebook. Open workplaces can be an extraordinary arrangement for some, organizations, contingent upon the structure of their group and the idea of their work. A progressively shared workforce, for example, is normally more effective in this condition than a free one. Like any office structure, there are upsides and downsides to the open office. As indicated by Flame Schoeder, ICF-credentialed life mentor, accomplishment in this format relies upon the kind of specialist. Ive saw that it is hardest on thoughtful people, those with touchy sensory systems and the individuals who attach their self-esteem to the status of a corner office, she said. Be that as it may, then again, the open office breeds more joint effort and more grounded bonds, Schoeder said. This increments everyones inborn feeling of responsibility in their way of life, which can make it simpler to take care of issues and complete work, she included. There can likewise be a progressively easygoing association, and subsequently increasingly real, among managers and representatives. The open office has become the standard for most organizations, with an end goal to make a progressively comprehensive, financially savvy working environment. Be that as it may, this format has additionally gotten reaction, with numerous laborers feeling less profitable and not so much esteemed but rather more shaky and diverted. Amusingly, a portion of the cons also identified with kinship and straightforwardness include not having any protection and feeling like you cannot think each discussion you have is feed for open information, said Vicki Salemi, vocation master atMonster.com. Editors note: Looking for desk areas for your office? Round out the beneath survey to be associated with sellers that can help. Astudy distributed in the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment, Health found that representatives working in little or medium-sized open-plan workplaces reliably revealed lower levels of occupation fulfillment, emotional prosperity, and simplicity of cooperation with associates than workers working in cell or shared-room workplaces. Furthermore, Sage announced that in open workplaces, efficiency is decreased by 15 percent, days off are expanded by 62 percent and interruptions are expanded by 54 percent, affecting even the most elevated performing representatives. These discoveries show a disturbing detach between favored office format and representative productivity and bliss. Does that mean the open office is dead? Not really. Regardless of its drawbacks, the open office plan is as yet esteemed by numerous pioneers. For example, Salemi expressed that the arrangement is suitable from a monetary viewpoint, which is a typical motivation behind why numerous businesses pick it over others. Set up however many individuals as would be prudent and see where natural discussions and meetings to generate new ideas happen, Salemi said. Be that as it may, it positively has its issues and theyre worth considering into your choice. [Not sure which office is directly for your business? Look at this article.] Every association needs to take some real time to contemplate whether [an open office] works with their way of life and what they plan to accomplish before focusing on it, said Schoeder. Its a responsibility of something beyond development costs. Whatever is in your way of life will be enhanced by bringing down the dividers. Theres much contention in regards to the work environment of things to come, with numerous working environment specialists anticipating a conclusion to open workplaces, and others asserting it will remain the liked (and generally moderate) choice. ETP Network is Empowering Todays Professionals
ETP Network is Empowering Todays Professionals Last year a guy signed on to JibberJobber and started sending me thoughtful enhancement requests. He has a strong background in software development, design and QA, and we struck up a cool relationship. He mentioned he wanted to introduce me to Rod Colon, founder of the ETP Network, and possibly have me speak on one of their weekly teleconferences. That happened in January of this year, where we had a fun, lively conversation. I shared 8 things to do in 08 with LinkedIn (I know, clever :p), and was very well received. This ETP audience was sharp, proactive, and eager to be CEOs of Me, Inc. It was a great experience. A few months later I had the opportunity to go to New Jersey to speak and reached out to my buddies at ETP to see if we could get together. Not only did we get together, we got together in style! This was my first experience at a restaurant where they printed custom menus just for our dinner. Huge thanks to the ETP team for making my visit to New Jersey feel like something reserved for royalty I came to understand that ETP was not just a New Jersey thing. I thought it was, but found new subscribers to JibberJobber who were states away from New Jersey I asked Rod what ETPs geographic boundaries were and they said there were none I immediately thought that some of you would love to get value from what ETP offers. You can get a lot of info from the ETP Network website, but here are 5 things I want to bring out: Access to weekly teleconferences. These start at 9:30pm EST and go for about two hours. I wouldnt think they actually work, if you told me about them, but having experienced them, and hearing about them from participants, Im very impressed. These are terrific shot-in-the-arm calls filled with concepts, strategy, tactics and techniques, and very helpful for those in a current job search. Involvement in the ETP Yahoo Group. Ive been receiving a digest of the e-mails and their is rich information shared there from current resources to ideas on finances to ETP news and events announcements. Getting-started guides and articles. From their benefits list, they state The basics of finding a new job always needs to be reinforced and reexamined. Forgetting the basics means wasted time, money, and opportunities. Stick with the basics and get results! This accompanies the ABCs of Job Search document and there are more where that came from! Being in with proactive networkers who understand Me, Inc. Ive found ETP members to be serious about being CEO of Me, Inc. AND very giving networkers. Rod Colon calls it a warm network, where there is a certain trust level just because of the fact that you are an ETP member. This is not taken lightly, and benefits many people. Information and training you need to understand real career management. I had to read plenty of books, blog posts, and articles, and go to various conferences and even get formal training that was my 2+ year path to understand personal career management. The ETP Network is big on helping you learn this stuff fast. Its inculcation at its best. The annual cost, if I understand correctly, is $25. This is not a big money-making thing the guys that run this have a fire in the belly that is contagious and powerful. If you are feeling stuck, I recommend you head over to ETP and see for yourself what they have to offer. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Why IT Needs to be Ready to Lead
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Why IT Needs to be Ready to Lead Having your department compared to the DMV isnt very flattering, but thats what is happening to many IT departments. Thats because many CIOs are focused on the technology and they dont really care about the user experience, hence the DMV reference. The comparison is made in a new book, The Big Shift in IT Leadership, by author Hunter Muller, who contends that many CIOs remain focused inward, only concerned with technology. But a small portion of CIOs see the writing on the wall, and know they need to play the game at a higher level by shifting their focus outward to provide a stellar customer experience, he says. While Muller acknowledges that undertaking a more customer-centric focus is a huge plate shift for CIOs, it is one that must take place not only for a CIOs own career trajectory, but also for the health of their company. CIOsneed to be readyto disrupt, facilitate and innovate, Muller says. They need to be recruiting, retaining and growing future IT talent. They need to communicate better. They need be passionate about the business fearless and tenacious. The best CIOs, he says, know that results beat out technology. Having great technology doesnt mean much if customers arent having a good user experience, because they will leave for the competition, he says. Speeds and feeds are fine, but having great metrics wont pay the bills, Muller says. Todays businesses focus on delighting customers, because that is how you make the most money. While embracing such new challenges may be daunting for some CIOs, Muller notes that the really neat thing about CIOs is that they have total visibility across the organization. He explains that with the access, CIOs have a golden opportunity to help develop innovative strategies and spur collaborations that will have a big impact on the organizations overall success. Today, IT really matters. It matters to the top line and to the bottom line. When IT has a bad day, the company has a bad day. When IT is on a roll, the company is on a roll, Muller says. In Mullers book, he makes several suggestions for those CIOs who are ready to make the big shift to key leadership within an organization. Among them: Build bridges.CEOs want trusted advisors around them and CIOs need to find ways to fit themselves into this role. If everyone in the C-suite plays golf or owns a sports car, do the same, Muller advises. This helps a CEO feel more comfortable that youre more than a techie and will fit easily into the inner circle. But this is just the beginning now you must learn to speak the language of the CEO and other (read more here) Photo:WPTidBits

CEOs can learn from job hoppers about personal responsibility
CEOs can learn from job hoppers about personal responsibility Climbing to the top of corporate America requires near complete abnegation of ones personal life, not in a sacrificial way, but in a child-like way. In most cases, when there are children, there is a wife at home taking care of the executives life in the same way she takes care of the childrens lives. This is not a judgment on whether people should have kids. Its fine to choose not to have kids. This is a judgment on whether people with kids should be CEOs of large companies. I have already laid out the argument that Fortune 500 CEOs, like Howard Stringer, who work 100-hour weeks and have kids at home, are neglecting their kids. Not neglecting them like, thats too bad. But neglecting them like, its totally irresponsible to have kids if you dont want to spend any time with them. I have also laid out the argument that men who have these top jobs can get there because they have a wife at home, running their personal life. Women get stuck in their ascent up the corporate ladder on the day their first child is born. Because women end up taking care of the kids. Women do not choose to compartmentalize kids and work the way men at the top of the ladder do. Eve Tahmincioglu recently published a book based on interviews with CEOs: From the Sandbox to the Corner Office. She says that usually, the wife is handling the marriage and the family. She is the one who keeps it all together. Most of the female CEOs that Tahmincioglu interviewed did not have kids, and Tahmincioglu says they attributed their success to their lack of children because the demands of a CEO are not compatible with taking care of kids. Meanwhile, lets take the job hopper. The job hopper does not stay at the same company forever. So while the climber gets his identity from a corporation, the job hopper takes full responsibility for forging his own identity. The job hopper focuses on the time in between jobs to gain increased flexibility. He can make himself available to take care of a sick relative, to fly overseas to adopt a baby, and to travel when a spouse is relocated. A job hopper can take on loads of responsibility to create family stability because a job hopper is flexible. Additionally, a job hopper can find passion in work more easily, because job hopping keeps ideas fresh and learning curves high. So whereas many ladder climbers work more than sixty hours a week to get that workplace adrenaline rush. Job hoppers can get the rush by starting something new. No need to give up family in order to get a rush from work. This means that a job hopper can have fulfilling work and take a hefty load of responsibility for adult life. There will be time to buy birthday presents for nieces. There will be time to plan surprise parties instead of delegating it to an assistant or a spouse. There will be time to worry about household issues and marital issues and all the things someone who works 100 hours a week has no time to be responsible for. The corporate climber, meanwhile, is isolated from the complications of real life. For example, business is full of measurable goals, acknowledgements for success, teambuilding, constant ranking, and societal pats on the back with big paychecks. Home life has none of this. We still do not know what really makes a good parent. There are no measurable goals for getting through a day with the in-laws so there is no reward system for it either. There is no way to measure who is a good family member. There is no definition of successful spouse. Home life is murky and difficult. Work life is structured and predictable. People who create careers that allow them to assume large levels of authority in their personal life are living as responsible adults. People who concentrate on work and delegate maintenance of all other aspects of their personal life are not truly living as adults. Adult life is difficult, challenging and full of ways to actively give our hearts to others. The world will be a better place when careers do not shield people from taking responsibility, but instead, facilitate it.

3 Ways to Acquire Referrals for Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
3 Ways to Acquire Referrals for Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There is no greater gift your personal brand can receive than a recommendation, referral, or testimonial. Iâm currently reading a great book by John Jantsch called The Referral Engine: Teaching Your Business to Market Itself. Although clearly a business book and not a personal branding book, so many of its principles can be applied to both. So how do you acquire said coveted referrals? Talk with, not at Engage and listen, donât just push out information. Itâs really that simple. Social networking sites in particular allow you to do this relatively easily. Before you know it, referrals will be coming your way. Educate your audience As Jantsch says, âReferrals are helpful only if theyâre given to the right people.â So, educate your audience about whom they should be spreading the good word to about you. Donât be boring When you build your personal brand, make sure it accurately represents you â" but keep in mind that nobody talks about boring brands. Have a great story to tell, and make sure others know that story. Create âbuzzâ around your brand by being quoted frequently in the traditional media and by blogs. In what other ways do you actively try to obtain recommendations, referrals, and testimonials? Author: Heather R.
